Well - the rally couldn't have gone any worse if we tried!
Harriet and I crashed out on SS2 of the Pirelli Plains Rally in a big crash that saw us roll the car 2 or 3 times (too disorientated to give a specific number!). Fortunately, we were both unharmed (though I was certainly aching from the impact!). It's with great thanks to the marshals that we were able to get out of the car safely and make our way over to a safe area away from the oncoming cars. They kept us company for the rest of the rally, with stories from different rallies they competed in or marshalled at. They were some wonderful people and a highlight of my rally experience so far, despite the circumstances!
Harriet and I learned several lessons from the experience, despite the disappointment. One we both felt though, was how incredibly eager we were to get back out in a rally car as soon as possible, which was great to see. The crash had no effect at all on our enjoyment of the sport, and we knew that we were in great hands with WB motorsport and crew.
One thing I've got to comment on though, is how well built and strong the Mini is. Considering it took a big impact and several rolls, it was sturdy as ever and no panel on the car came close to encroaching on the roll cage. It's a real testament to the engineering behind the BMW Mini and also the no-corners-cut work by WB Motorsport to build a capable and safe rally car. I actually feel safer in one of these than a regular road car!
Unfortunately, with the engine being upside down for so long and with all the damage sustained to the bodywork, the car is going to be written off. We will be using a newly built Yellow Challenge car in its place for the next rally.
Many thanks again to the marshals, WB motorsport, Harriet and more for being so helpful, friendly and supportive. We'll be back stronger and better!
